... ... ..!! ...
Feb. 28th, 2006 02:22 pmOdd mood. Giddy, almost.
Less than two weeks to the Sisters, which is good.
========
Got my hands on /Gateways/, and am thinking superhero comics-time could *greatly* benefit from a lesson from Repairman Jack. The books are set in now. The books are *always* set in now. Twenty-six months ago happened in 1984, and it just runs along smoothly.
This takes a little more work for Jack by virtue of his existence--forensics and bureaucracy are an active concern for him. At the same time, if he didn't take precautions against forensic techniques that didn't exist two decades ago the summer before last, it's obviously not an issue. Perhaps he took them and didn't comment on them. Perhaps the police did not apply them. Perhaps they didn't work.
With comics, yes, it's more of an issue because the background detail is actually *there*. Yes, technology changes. At the same time, honestly, how horrendous is it if said technology isn't up to date? My sister owns a record player. I could put some of my favourite songs on my USB key. We are not actually separated by a gulf of decades. And it's not like yon average comics reader is going to start complaining about how that's a piece of Shi'ar technology from 1963 and the Empire is only producing sensopal drives now, not gestonfirs.[1]
Other big issue; world events date characters. Your options there are to either not have the characters deal with them in continuity (which is different from not having them happen in continuity), or bring said characters to a graceful end before the time gap becomes unworkable.
(Ah, comics which didn't run on for hundreds of issues. Imagine the freedom...)
========
Dammit, people, I go to the office to work. I do not go here to socialize. I have people I choose to socialize with. I do not particularly enjoy being expected to socialize and get paid for it. Would you mind just being my co-workers? Thanks.

[1] They're not, right? Marvel hasn't come out with a guideful of tech specs a la Star Trek geekery? No? Good.
