I was poking around on the LJs of some friends (oh, the convenience that might come of updating my Friends list--forget it), and I ran across the following quote.

========

"...the world doesn't care about our little federal election. In fact, there is only one time that the world cares about Canada. It is when some poor, desperate human beings become driven enough to pack up their family and look for a land where they will be safe from torture, oppression and racism and where they can prosper at whatever they do, be taken care of if they're sick, and educate their children to their full potential. When that day comes, then they care about Canada.

Be careful how you vote. You wouldn't want to let them down."
- Bob Robertson, from Double Exposure.

========

And she then went on to speak of working the polls (yes, old post), in what I thought was a very moving piece of writing. There's no other word for it, and believe me, I went looking for a few.

And I got to thinking.

It's expensive. It's painful. It's bloody hard to keep track of sometimes, and unless I hold onto it with both hands and possibly my teeth as well, it's likely to be one of the first things that goes slipping away when I'm tired or miserable or stressed.

But I love my idealism, I do. Because if it is not the standard by which all things are measured, it is that which causes me to care about the measuring.
