So. The databases I need to do my work were scheduled for two hours downtime today. I found out about this when I got in this morning.

This is slightly less than ideal--normally I would hunt up work from other people, but very few are in the office today--and I will try to make up the time tomorrow and Friday, but I think I made good use of the impromptu extended lunch.

I went down to Living Colour and got my right ear--which has long since grown shut[1]--pierced and my left ear--since the piercing that I had there, while not closed, was not quite 14 gauge--tapered. And I have matched earrings again, plain silver rings with captive beads. The staff were very patient and helpful, which is good, since I think I was babbling a bit.

(Having to rewrite that last sentance so that it specifically refers to patient and helpful staff, rather than a patient and helpful "they" who could in fact be construed to be the earrings, may be an example of this. As is this parenthesised explanation.)

I feel ridiculously good about this.

I had my ears pierced with a gun when I was... 12?... and it hurt for hours. And they used butterfly back studs. And I think I was told to put rubbing alcohol on it and turn them regularly. And they behaved about as you'd expect earlobes to do when a non-sterilizable chunk of metal was shoved through them and they were regularly prodded at.[2]

This piercing hurt a little when I got it--needles do that, I understand--but flu shots hurt worse. What's surprising me is how quickly it stopped hurting. My tattoo stopped hurting this quickly, but it's tiny and I always rather assumed that had something to do with the endorphins that had me giggling on and off for a couple of hours. This...

*gestures vaguely at ear, careful not to touch it*

This doesn't even feel like it was cut anymore.

The taper still aches a little--a kind of burning pinch--but I am profoundly unsuprised and unconcerned over this. Right now the most noticeable thing is that both my ears smell of disinfectant.

It's been a good day.

[1] I think the last time I wore something in it was for when a friend's mother had an I'm-not-dead party a few years back, and it had started to grow shut by then. I discovered at the end of the night that there was blood dripping down the back of my ear. Fortunately none of it got on the blouse. And I thought it was just a little snug from not having anything in it for so long... I cannot recommend strongly enough that, if ever given the option, you *not* repierce by hand with an earring post.
[2] Look, I was a very naive 12, okay?
