green_dreams: (green-eyed grey-faced peering cat)

Heading down to shopping mall to look at renting rug cleaner and buy envelopes. Saw cat that looked like the cat I've been seeing up on the mailboxes around here, with "His name is Crumble he is losted" and "we miss him very much" and all that.

Walked over; this was okay. Petted him; this was okay. Thought about it for a bit and picked him up and started walking back to my place; this too was okay.

Then it wasn't.

So I went home and explained that I'd been bitten by a cat and thought I needed to go to a doctor. And John agreed. And-- really, it's sort of startling how much blood can come out of four small holes. I mean it wasn't a dangerous amount, but my goodness red is an arresting colour. Particularly my red.

John, wonderfully, went out to find the cat and caught him and put him inna box. Then we found out that yes, all the "Lost Cat" posters had been taken down--I think Canada Post was cleaning--and the local vet had already closed. (So had all the walk-in clinics, which is why I needed to go to the ER.) John called a couple of people who owed him a car-based favour, and they took the cat to the 24-hour vet's and me to the hospital.

Everyone was very nice at the hospital. I cannot overstate this, I feel. Unfortunately, the cafeteria was closed and the vending machines were sparse--did I mention I'd had a light late lunch at three? and by this time it was nine?--but the people were very nice.

So I knit for a bit--I think I got eight inches of a scarf done--and then got to see the doctor, and got a prescription for antibiotics and a rundown of what needed doing. "He was identified? And has owners? Good. If the city can watch him for ten days and he doesn't start acting crazy, you won't need a rabies shot."

I understand they are somewhat less painful these days, but I really don't want a rabies shot. So that was good news. And am glad again that John caught the cat and it was IDable.

Waited a tiny bit longer, and then got a tetanus shot and a dressing that... this thing is about a third of an inch thick. It makes the whole thing look Very Serious. And I have more gauze and bandages for changing it, and repeated admonitions to come back if there is any sign of infection. I am hoping that'll be fine, though. Then John came and picked me up and took me to the pharmacy and right now I am downing the Powerade and then I am going the hell to sleep. (Also I have had marshmallows. I have not had those in at least three years. They are very nice.)

Final note: the cat was the cat on the lost cat posters, and the person watching him was very very glad to hear he'd been found. So that is alright. :)
