Sending formal taxonomy to hell in a handbasket for the moment (meaning: don't look it up, I have Google too, that's not what I'm asking): do you think of hyenas as canine, feline, or neither?

I was discussing cats and Lovecraft. Lovecraft's ghouls have always been something I was fond of and have always reminded me, more than anything else, of hyenas. I was curious about... not taxonomy, exactly, but the style of ghouls as opposed to cats, and how other people saw hyenas?
