Idle chit-chat with one of the co-workers. Heard about child out of wedlock given away for adoption, efforts to find someone to be with.

I am not that approachable, I don't think, so perhaps there are just a lot of lonely people at work.

========

Tagline on the old The Hills Have Eyes was "The lucky ones died first..."; subtle changes have been brought about by the switch to present tense ("the lucky ones die first", without grammar or punctuation on the movie site). Will be watching for other differences. Am remembering a scene from the trailer of the new one where the protagonists are discovering the lack of cellphone reception; I need to sit down[1] and take a look at how people are being isolated in movies, see what's worked and what's come across as a railroading trick as technology and connections have become more and more pervasive.

Because isolation is key, dammit. And if the threat is not such that isolation is endemic ("yes, my cellphone is working, but the social infrastructure has been eaten by zombies!"), you have to establish that all the standard modes of yelling for help are broken.

EDIT 2: The other way to break yelling for help is to have the cries for help be unbelievable, and thus unutterable or dismissed.

(And yeah, it's all railroading. But that's okay. It's when it looks like railroading in spite of the sense associated with the story that it's bad.)

EDIT: THHE was apparently based on the Sawney Beane story. Might not be true; still, must check into other murderous family movies. I know Leatherface was supposed to be inspired by Ed Gein (along with how many others?), but don't know if the Sawyer family was at all inspired by the Sawney Beane family. Sure, there are similarities, but how many different ways can you run with that theme?

(Found an article entitled "Sawney Beane: Myth or Myth?" Cannot really argue. Still an intriguing story.)

Of course, it's not like the murderous family movies weren't based on other murderous family movies... (Another one's tickling my brain now. Family of lunatics. Little girl who thinks she's a spider, stings (stabs) some poor outsider to death. I can see the video box cover in my mind. Pale thing, almost chiaroscuro, very few shadows.)

Migod, the Park Hyatt in Toronto has the same kind of weird wedge shape as the Flatiron Building. I love the Flatiron Building. (Or possibly just all the pictures I have of it.)

Before the 10th, definitely.

I'm booked Thursday evenings and this Friday. Tonight is bad, since we're laying the new rug down. What are you doing Wednesday?

Tomorrow works. I had forgotten about that whole reading week thing; I will try and grab a copy of it tonight.

I can provide dinner, but will need a reminder of what constitutes unworkable ingredients.
