I just saw Hard Core Logo.
I was not aware that it was fiction presented as a documentary rather than a documentary (though I did wonder a couple of times about the camera cuts).
As a result, at the end of the movie, I was treated to the sight of some guy blowing his brains out, rather than a character blowing his brains out.
...my stomach is still a tension knot.
On a related note, I got to thinking about what
ursulav has to say about musculature and lighting and perspective in her paintings; how if the setting and all the tiny details rings true enough, people are much more likely to accept the dragons and what-all.
Subconscious realism cues are like a root password to activate suspension of disbelief.
The writer I know who drops in cues that most fully construct a world is Guy Gavriel Kay. Unfortunately, I can't analyze his work to figure out how he does it; I pick it up and it's so good I get wrapped up in it, I can't pull back far enough to analyze.
