I'm ashamed to say...
Jun. 29th, 2005 03:30 am...I didn't even know until about 9:00 p.m. tonight. Yesterday night. That Tuesday thing. Which is actually not so bad. Found out via John's LJ, glancing over his shoulder while he was catching up on Friends.
Next up, the Senate. Am expecting it to pass there. Touch wood, and breathe; I've been told I'm sheltered and occasionally naive, but I couldn't really see it *not* passing.[1] I mean... it's marriage, right? "The right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination", yes? We are all over seeing homosexuality as a great and unacceptable perversion to be treated with electroshock therapy, correct?[2]
...my God, the Charter's younger than I am. I'd forgotten that.
's not to say some things about Canada don't annoy me, but... not this. I'd hesitate to call myself patriotic, but (all mad fannishness of London and England considered) I can't think of anyplace else I'd rather be living right now.

[1] Ah, my gentle innocence and faith in humanity.
[2] Well, no, we're not. Though apparently we're getting over enforcing such views in legislation. Baby steps.
This enactment extends the legal capacity for marriage for civil purposes to same-sex couples in order to reflect values of tolerance, respect and equality, consistent with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It also makes consequential amendments to other Acts to ensure equal access for same-sex couples to the civil effects of marriage and divorce. The entire text of the Act is here; it's perhaps two thousand words long (in English, that is; naturally enough, it comes in both languages). Fast read.
