...I didn't even know until about 9:00 p.m. tonight. Yesterday night. That Tuesday thing. Which is actually not so bad. Found out via John's LJ, glancing over his shoulder while he was catching up on Friends.
This enactment extends the legal capacity for marriage for civil purposes to same-sex couples in order to reflect values of tolerance, respect and equality, consistent with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It also makes consequential amendments to other Acts to ensure equal access for same-sex couples to the civil effects of marriage and divorce.
The entire text of the Act is here; it's perhaps two thousand words long (in English, that is; naturally enough, it comes in both languages). Fast read.

Next up, the Senate. Am expecting it to pass there. Touch wood, and breathe; I've been told I'm sheltered and occasionally naive, but I couldn't really see it *not* passing.[1] I mean... it's marriage, right? "The right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination", yes? We are all over seeing homosexuality as a great and unacceptable perversion to be treated with electroshock therapy, correct?[2]

...my God, the Charter's younger than I am. I'd forgotten that.

's not to say some things about Canada don't annoy me, but... not this. I'd hesitate to call myself patriotic, but (all mad fannishness of London and England considered) I can't think of anyplace else I'd rather be living right now.

[1] Ah, my gentle innocence and faith in humanity.
[2] Well, no, we're not. Though apparently we're getting over enforcing such views in legislation. Baby steps.

Want to know why?

If I suddenly won the Megamillions lottery, I'd move to Switzerland.

I'll bite. Why?

(You know, I think you're the only person I know who consistently posts Subject: lines on the comments. Not that I mind.)

1) Switzerland doesn't have labor-based income tax. They have capital gains and sales taxes.
2) Switzerland has real referendum, by which I mean, the voters can overturn an act of the legislature, that's a Hell of a lot more democratic than what the U.S. does.
3) They use Proportional Representation in their National Council.
4) The Green Party is a major political party.
5) They have compulsary military service, which is honestly something I have no problem with. It is the right (if not the duty) of all reasonable ethical agents to assist other reasonable ethical agents in the defense of their rights, which include the rights to life and reasonable liberty (by which I mean the right to do whatever you want as long as it doesn't create an unreasonable risk of infringement on the rights of other reasonable ethical agents).

Dude, the Charter's younger (by a few months) than my little brother.

It's wierd. I always find that surprising. :-\

Ah, well. At least we've got it now. :-)
