This was the view out my window this morning.

Rain, blessed cool gloomy spattering rain. Finally.

It recently occurred to me that the fans are doing okay at cooling down the apartment. The fans run off electricity. We pay for electricity.

However, leaving a cold shower running would also do very well at cooling down the apartment. It would only require water--vast quantities, I grant you, but still only water.

We do not pay for water.

I am trying not to exploit this line of reasoning. I am a kind and gentle soul, after all.

Finished painting today. Must go to next one. Am having trouble getting a decent picture of it, scanner still isn't working (though I haven't taken it in to get the formal diagnosis of "Get a new one" yet), have non-decent pictures of it but... meh. Will stress about it all later.

Broke up catfight. There is a certain special kind of stupid required to stick your hands into a roiling yowling ball of fur that's about a foot and a half across--not the most flagrant or dangerous type of stupid, I think, but nonetheless present. Apparently I possess this requisite stupid. Both cats okay.

Ultimately, the leaving a cold shower running idea isn't all that harmful to the environment, I don't think.

It's not so much the harmful to the environment as the blatant exploitation of the landlord.

Feh. Are you linked into a public water system or does your water come from a well?

Well water?

This isn't a third-world country, man.

I forgot if you lived in a city or in the country; I've lived places where we had well-water ... because we lived in the sticks and there wasn't any public water system.

Hey, I grew up on well water. Really damn good well water.

How about a comprimise? http://mirrordot.org/stories/5cb66a4a72a5269bc29e9dd8f982b3da/index.html

And the shower idea would really jack up the humidity.

Looks nifty, but like too much work.

Anyway, I don't mind the humidity when it's cool. And since running a cold shower not very hard for a few hours[1] can result in a sort of zone of coolth[2] that reaches halfway through the apartment, I'm sure the results'd be okay.

[1] Although I usually go for jeans and T-shirts, I do have a few clothes which are to be gently swished through cold water in order to set the dye when they're first bought or cleaned afterwards. Sticking them under a drizzling cold shower is a workable substitute that does not require me to sacrifice time, effort, or the feeling in my fingers.
[2] Possibly the coolest word ever invented by Lieber.

I used to partially heat my apartment in winter with the hot water from the shower.

The new apartment is different.

Don't think I could've done that; the hot water heater tends to throw up its hands and go for a nap ~4:00 p.m. Glad I didn't need to, though, and it's good to know it's a viable option in a pinch...
